As part of Mujeres Unidas, our members pride themselves in being involved in a variety of activities that help our community. We want to make our communities better, get involved with the environment around us, and of course, empower the woman. COMMUNITY SERVICE One of the main ways that we help out our community hands on is through community service. It is something that we hold to great importance, and for that reason we hold and get involved in various activities every month throughout the school year. Some of our activities include: cleaning our adopted street on University Avenue (between McDonald's and Applebee's) attending the AIDS and the Breast Cancer walks. In addition, we donate items to the disadvantaged, such as creating food baskets for families in need or donating money to victims of natural disasters. MENTOR PROGRAM Mujeres Unidas believe that education is a key factor to succeeding in this society. As a result, Mujeres Unidas began a mentor/mentee outreach program a few years ago in hopes of assisting young girls in the surrounding community with their educational process. Our Mentor Program is something similar to a little sister, big sister program in which we help out girls from ESL classes. Many of the girls have a language barrier because they just recently began their education and need help. We not only help them out doing their homework but we also take them out to the mall, movies, community service events, and so on. We encourage them to further their education even if they can not get into a University. ACADEMICS Since we value education, we reserve a study room in the Rivera Library every quarter to provide a study area for our members. We also have a sign-in/sign-out notebook in the Rivera and Science library to encourage/help Mujeres study and focus on academics. In addition, at the end of each quarter we reward a Mujer who does the most study hours in the library. FUNDRAISING We hold a series of fundraisers in order to support our various events and programs because we are a nonprofit organization. Some of these programs and events we raise funds for include: Our Mentor Program, Formal, Our Annual Conference, and various Community Service events. Some of the fundraisers we hold include: taco sales, candy sales, and TV tapings. We also look for contributions and sponsorships from various companies and community members. We enjoy having FUN, but through our socials we also have the opportunities to learn about others.
